A Message from the Australian Refrigeration Council
The Australian Refrigeration Council (ARC) has recommended inclusion of a refrigerant analyser as an essential item of refrigeration and air conditioning workshop equipment, even though it is not a legal licensing requirement.
The importance of refrigerant analysers
The Australian Refrigeration Council (ARC) has recommended inclusion of a refrigerant analyser as an essential item of refrigeration and air conditioning workshop equipment, even though it is not a legal licensing requirement.
The national licensing body for Australia’s refrigeration technicians and businesses says refrigerant analysers are a sound investment in protecting against the hazards of inadvertently using contaminated refrigerant.
ARC chief executive officer Glenn Evans
ARC chief executive officer Glenn Evans said it was vital for both commercial and safety reasons that climate control technicians know what gas they are handling.
“This applies to everyone working in climate control, but it’s a particular challenge in the automotive sector, where you might not know a vehicle’s service history,” he said.
“Having an analyser is insurance against the potentially serious consequences for you, your staff and your customers that having contaminated gas can cause.
“Consider the workshop that unknowingly recovered contaminated refrigerant from a customer vehicle, and thereby contaminated its workshop equipment and several other customer cars.
“That’s a costly problem to fix, but an even greater risk is where a system might have been illegally charged with a flammable refrigerant, and that can lead to serious injuries.”
Mr Evans said there was a wide range of analysers available, some at surprisingly low cost, which would prevent such problems before they happened.
“People who bring in a car with contaminated gas might not know it, but the damage will be done just the same, unless you analyse the gas before working on it” he said.

GridBeyond’s latest white paper looks at risk and return for battery storage
GridBeyond’s latest white paper looks at risk and return for battery storage. The paper also looks at the battery storage models, associated risks and potential profitability.
Battery storage investors are witnessing a shifting landscape in the sector, navigating the complexities of tolls, floors, and merchant models. As the energy storage market matures, there is a discernible trend suggesting increasing investor comfort with associated risks.
While tolling arrangements and floor prices act to provide a predictable income, the merchant model, where revenues are tied to market prices, introduces an element of risk but also the potential for higher returns. As stakeholders gain a deeper understanding of the risk-return dynamics within the battery storage sector, a more balanced and informed investment landscape emerges.
This trend signifies a maturing market where investors are progressively embracing the potential of battery storage assets while strategically managing associated risks, says GridBeyond’s latest white paper ‘Tolls, floors and merchant models: Do higher risks mean higher returns for battery storage investors?’ by Scott Berrie, Asset Development Director at GridBeyond.
The paper also looks at the battery storage models, associated risks and potential profitability.
There are numerous financing options available for battery storage assets including tolling model, merchant model and trading opportunities like Frequency Response Services, Capacity Market and Balancing Mechanism (BM), and wholesale market trading. High energy prices, capacity market auctions, new frequency response products, local flexibility tenders and pathfinder projects have further increased investor appetite for energy storage technologies. Investors are also getting more comfortable with the associated merchant risk and understand that in the absence of long-term or government-backed contracts, the market has created mechanisms that allow a route to market for battery systems says Scott Berrie.
Scott Berrie, Asset Development Director at GridBeyond commented:
“Storage assets are a great opportunities for businesses which can increase their revenues according to their strategy and objectives while moving towards net zero goals AI together with a suite of trading services, allow businesses to generate revenues allowing full access-to-market and to the most lucrative balancing services”.

State of the Phish report by Proofpoint
The 2024 State of the Phish report by Proofpoint has revealed significant insights into the current cybersecurity landscape, focusing on the human element of security threats. Here’s a summary read the report.
The 2024 State of the Phish report by Proofpoint has revealed significant insights into the current cybersecurity landscape, focusing on the human element of security threats.
Here’s a summary for you;
Employee Risk Behaviour: A striking 68% of employees reportedly engage in actions that knowingly put their organizations at risk, leading to potential ransomware or malware infections, data breaches, or financial losses. Despite a decline in the number of successful phishing attacks, the repercussions, such as financial penalties and reputational damage, have notably increased (up 144% and 50%, respectively).
Security Awareness vs. Actions: The report highlights a gap between security awareness and actual behaviour. While 71% of working adults admit to engaging in risky actions, 96% are aware of the dangers. This contradiction underscores the challenge of transforming knowledge into secure behaviour, as people often prioritize convenience or urgency over security.
Discrepancies in Security Perceptions: There's a notable disparity between what security professionals and employees believe is effective for encouraging safer behaviour. While most security professionals advocate for more training and tighter controls, a large majority of employees (94%) suggest they would prioritize security if controls were simpler and more user-friendly.
Rising Threats and False Security: The misuse of technologies such as multifactor authentication (MFA), generative AI, and QR codes by malicious actors is on the rise. Despite over one million MFA-bypass attacks per month, 89% of security professionals mistakenly believe MFA provides complete protection against account takeovers.
Cyber Extortion and Phishing Trends: Business Email Compromise (BEC) attacks have increased, with significant growth in countries like Japan, South Korea, and the UAE, facilitated by AI technologies. The report also indicates a persistence of cyber extortion and ransomware as major threats, with 69% of organizations experiencing a successful ransomware infection last year.
TOAD Attacks and Lack of Preparedness: Telephone-oriented attack delivery (TOAD) remains a prevalent method, with Proofpoint detecting an average of 10 million TOAD attacks per month. However, only 23% of organizations educate their users on recognizing and preventing such attacks.
Regional Insights and Global Challenges: The report provides regional data, noting variations in attack types and preparedness levels across different areas. For example, North American organizations reported a high incidence of TOAD attacks and ransom payments.
Overall, the report emphasizes the crucial role of human behaviour in cybersecurity and suggests that knowledge alone is not enough to ensure security. Organisations need to bridge the gap between awareness and action by simplifying security measures and focusing on behavioural change.
