The import and manufacture of small air conditioning equipment with high global warming potential refrigerant (GWP over 750) has been banned as of 1 July 2024.
The Australian Refrigeration Council (ARC) has welcomed the ban, which applies to air conditioning equipment designed to be used to cool or heat, or both, a stationary space primarily for human comfort if the equipment is:
an outdoor unit for a single-head split system air conditioning system
a portable air conditioner
a window/wall air conditioner (a single unit designed to be fixed to a window or wall)
and the equipment:
has a standard refrigerant charge of 2.6 kilogram or less, and
contains, or is designed to operate with, an HFC refrigerant that has a global warming potential (GWP) of more than 750.
ARC chief executive officer Glenn Evans said existing equipment in Australia would not be affected, and the ban would not apply to:
outdoor units for ducted systems
indoor units of split systems when imported separately from the outdoor unit
equipment for mobile applications such as motor vehicles, caravans, aircraft and boats
systems for use in electrical enclosures and computer rooms
air-to-water equipment, such as units for hydronic home heating systems, swimming pool heat pumps
humidifiers or dehumidifiers.
Importers will be able to apply for an exemption to the ban in certain circumstances. Equipment imported or manufactured in Australia before 1 July 2024 may be sold after that date.

Introducing the Frank Vale State Winners!
It’s that time of year again when the process of nominating state winners of the Frank Vale Award from each state of Australia occurs. The winner of the Frank Vale Award will be announced at the Gala Dinner at the RWTA Annual Conference, this year being held at Cape Schanck at the Mornington Peninsula.
Introducing the Frank Vale State Winners!
It’s that time of year again when the process of nominating state winners of the Frank Vale Award from each state of Australia occurs.
The Frank Vale Award, presented annually in Australia sine 1993, acknowledges talented young professionals under 35 who have at least three years of experience in the cold chain industry and have demonstrated leadership potential and a commitment to advancing the Australian Cold Chain Industry.
The process is lengthy, thorough, and is judged annually by a multiple experienced cold chain executives. We would like to thank and acknowledge these judges as it takes time and coordination of their busy schedules to speak with the competitors and then draw a winner. Thanks must go to Graham Harvey, Craig Adams, Paul Fleiszig, Ashlee Arnall, Cameron Trewin, Robert Hall and Lyndon Watson.
The winner of the Frank Vale Award will be announced at the Gala Dinner at the RWTA Annual Conference, this year being held at Cape Schanck at the Mornington Peninsula.
The winner will be sent to attend the Global Cold Chain Alliances (GCCA) Annual Conference in Florida later this year.
We would like to introduce these promising competitors and thank their Managers for nominating such excellent talents! We wish them all the very best in the competition!
Choice Energy, helping you save money, when you need it most
The budget announcement delivered by the Government in May, delivered little relief for small businesses when it comes to paying their power bills; $325 rebate for one million Australian businesses.
The budget announcement delivered by the Government in May, delivered little relief for small businesses when it comes to paying their power bills; $325 rebate for one million Australian businesses.
Australia is in the worst energy crisis it's ever been in, and Government rebates are minimal. Businesses need to take control of their energy usage and expenditure.
RWTA Member, Choice Energy, provides free energy procurement and management solutions to you with no obligation to commit to savings sourced. For example, Western Tanker Services was keen to see how they could save on their operational expenditure by contact with Choice Energy. They are expected to save $12,000 per annum on their energy bills thanks to an installation of a 30kW solar system.
Given there will be little to no energy pain relief for the foreseeable future, it's important that businesses remain vigilant; and energy costs you can control.

Practices to Improve the Sustainability of Australian Cold Storage Facilities
This paper addresses the urgency of enhancing the sustainability of cold storage warehouses in Australia, crucial for food preservation and reducing energy consumption and emissions. The authors conducted convergent interviews with experts to develop a hierarchical framework of best to essential sustainability practices for refrigerated warehouses. View the top 6 key findings.
Key findings include:
Refrigeration Systems: Transition to more sustainable refrigerants like ammonia, which has zero Global Warming Potential (GWP) and Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP), is emphasized. Low-charge ammonia direct expansion systems are highlighted as future-focused, offering lower ongoing costs and emissions.
Insulation and Building Design: Improved insulation techniques, especially using polyisocyanurate (PIR) panels, are crucial. Design elements like building orientation and using materials that reflect solar radiation can significantly enhance energy efficiency.
Air and Water Infiltration: Managing infiltration through high-quality doors and strategic use of anterooms (airlocks) to buffer temperature and moisture content is critical.
Automation and Control: Implementing advanced control systems and technologies like automatic storage and retrieval systems (ASRS) and variable-speed drives (VSDs) can lead to significant energy savings and operational efficiency.
Sustainability Best Practices: The study advocates for a layered approach to adopting technologies, with each layer building on the previous one. Essential practices should be implemented universally, while more advanced systems and controls can be adopted progressively based on specific needs and capabilities.
Policy and Industry Engagement: Stronger policy measures and industry engagement are necessary to encourage widespread adoption of these practices. The study suggests more active dissemination of success stories and failures to foster a more robust adoption framework.
The document concludes that a strategic, informed approach can significantly enhance the sustainability of cold storage operations, contributing to broader environmental goals and operational efficiency.

The NHVR are halfway through the 2024 Heavy Vehicle Safety Survey, and are looking to have as many people weigh in as possible, including drivers, loaders, schedulers and management.
This is their fourth Safety Survey and it will be used to gather valuable data and insights into how safety responsibilities are currently being managed across the industry.
Feedback from the Safety Survey helps to ensure that the NHVR adapts to changing risks and technologies in order to support the heavy vehicle industry through information, education and safety initiatives.
Additionally, the survey has questions which will help them to measure the level of understanding of the Chain of Responsibility across the industry, as well as how people prefer to receive safety information from the NHVR.
The Safety Survey is being facilitated by Insync, an independent provider, and confidentiality is assured. Insync's Privacy Policy and the NHVR’s Privacy Policy comply with Australian legislation, and this prohibits the provision of survey responses to the responder’s organisation or any third party in a manner which would allow responses to be linked back to them.
The survey can be accessed through the link below and will remain open until 18 June 2024.
